What to Look for When Buying a Musical Instrument
8 January 2007One thing you should do before buying, or even seeking out a musical instrument is to spend some time thinking about your needs and wants. Most of us would like to have the best of everything, but if you are just beginning your musical career, getting the best instrument made may not be the best choice, since this may cost several thousand dollars. However, if you have been playing an instrument for a while, you may feel you could benefit from a higher quality of instrument than what you are currently playing; one analogy that is helpful when consider a music instrument is to compare instruments to cars. In either case, you can buy new or used, and brand will have a big effect on the value and overall quality of a car or instrument. Your needs, budget, and experience can help you decide which instrument is best for you.
If you are a beginner, you may want to purchase an instrument on a budget and decide if it is something you enjoy before spending much money. Although this is probably a good idea, you must be sure that the instrument you purchase is not too cheap, or it will not be capable of producing notes and chords properly, which means that not even an experienced musician could make the instrument sound good; if you purchase an instrument like this, you will probably not like it, since you will not know if you are getting better or not. Band directors, music shops, and other musicians are excellent people to consult with before buying an instrument. Someone more experience may know about certain brands, or can play the instrument and give you an idea of the overall quality.
One aspect to consider, especially if you have been playing for a while and want a better instrument, the possibility of a used instrument. Instruments can be like car in that a basic compact car can cost around $15,000 USD new, or you can get a bigger, nicer car that is a year or two old for about the same price. If you want a nicer instrument but are on a budget, you may be able to locate a very high quality used instrument at a bargain price.
No matter what your experience level is, when purchasing a musical instrument there is no replacement for researching the market, both locally and on the internet. One of the best ways to determine the value of an instrument is to find out what they are selling for on the open market. If you find an instrument you like, but you don’t agree with the price, don’t be afraid to make another offer; you might be pleasantly surprised by the response.
