Maria Sharapova has sacrificed 100 thousand dollars
15 February 2007Maria Sharapova has been appointed as the ambassador of the UN Program of Development (UNDP). Maria has officially promised to use her charm and popularity to galvanize support to struggle against world poverty.
At the press conference the 19-year-old tennis player has also said that her first step should concentrate on the Chernobyl-mentioned area - the motherland of her family. She has also said that, nowadays poverty and shortage of opportunities in these countries which state the greatest threat to young people, living in Chernobyl region.
Maria Sharapova has sacrificed 100 thousand dollars to the Chernobyl Victims’ Fund. Before becoming the UN’s anti-poverty ambassador, the well-known tennis player has also been engaged in charity. The Fund of Maria Sharapova finances the projects aimed at improvement of hospital services, computer access, and promotion of ecological understanding and restoration of sports objects in Russia, Ukraine and Belarus, as in the countries, most suffered from Chernobyl catastrophe.
Acting as UNDP ambassador, Maria Sharapova will advance the international efforts to reach the Millennium Development Goals of the poverty reduction in areas of health, the female rights and education.
However, Maria is not the only ″famous″ UNDP ambassador. Among other UN ambassadors are Misako Konno, Ronaldo, Zinedine Zidane and Didier Drogba.
